A Case for Generosity

Proverbs 28:27 says, “He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.” This is in keeping with a number of the Proverbs (e.g., 19:17; 21:13; and, 22:9) and with the manifest heart of God revealed throughout all of Scripture (His generosity and His concern for the needy). Compare all this with Matthew 25:44-46 (“…whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.”) and it all becomes quite sobering!

On the one hand, our whole culture is built upon amassing, hording and holding on to all we can. On the other, the needs seem completely overwhelming – people without jobs, elderly unable to buy their medications, people working minimum wage jobs for 20 hours a week, abandoned or abused children, homeless families… the list goes on and on. And that is just in our country. World-wide it is absolutely mind-numbing: Haiti, Somalia, Chile, India, Mexico; people live in garbage dumps in houses made of cardboard, children die for lack of basic medicines, clean water or food, squalor, nakedness, famine, disease and death... all of this because we have neglected the Wisdom and the Heart of God!

God forgive us, and more importantly, God help us to respond to human needs with generosity! We cannot give to every need in the world, but we can give to those whom God lays upon our hearts or leads to our door.

When you think about it, there are a hundred reasons to say, “No”, but just One Reason Who calls us to say, “Yes!”

What do you think?
